I am looking at a generic derma pen I found online for around $100 with 20 sealed needle heads (since the original derma pen is over $500). I have some acne scars and pimples that have not healed in months and linger under my skin. I was hoping to try a generic mirco needling pen, but not sure what cream/serum I should apply before using the pen (for lubrication effect and nutrient absorption) as well as after using the pen. I am also currently on Doxycycline and have been for a couple of months.
Answer: Microneedling Serums It is advisable to use liquid serums when undergoingmicroneedling procedures. For instance, you can use your own growth factors tohelp(PRP) or a pharmaceutical growth factor.to help stimulate collagen. Thisserum will also help in reducing your scars. Vitamin C is not advisable to useduring the procedure, but it is advisable after. With all that said, I feel that you must still consultwith a board certified plastic surgeon medical professional regarding your microneedling interest. The doctorwill be able to do a detailed assessment of your case as well as create atreatment plan suited for you. He or she will also give you after care tips andmaintenance regimen for the next 72 hours after each session. Doing it at home, especially if you are first timer may trigger unwanted after effects and youwill not be able to get the maximum result that you are looking for.

Answer: Microneedling Thank you for your message! While at-home products can provide some value, I would recommend a consultation with a provider in your area prior to doing any treatment. Microneedling can cause scarring or other complications if not properly. Office microneedling treatments can be more expensive but often will give you a better result! We usually work hyaluronic acid into the skin during our microneedling treatments. In the office setting, PRP, or platelet rich plasma, can be worked into the skin as well!

Answer: Serums for Microneedling I would recommend a liquid serum vs. a cream to use during the treatment. A hyaluronic serum will help to smooth and hydrate the skin while a serum with growth factors will be beneficial to help stimulate collagen production- something that will encourage your scarring to be diminished. After care should be light. Continued treatment will help to maximize results. Keep in mind that whatever product you apply needs to be formulated to safely apply to deeper depths of the skin than traditional topical products. You should a see a Board Certified Dermatologist and get their recommendation before starting any new home care regime.

Answer: HOMEWORK Good choice.... I often give my acne scar patients homework in between INFINI RF Microneedling sessions. Here is my pick -1. MICRONEEDLE RF, rest for 2 weeks2. Skin rolling or even better micro needling pen (DO NOT use more than 3 mm in the temporal areas or you will hit the nerve and temporal artery)3. See a dermatologist to prescribe you Vitamin A - Zorac or Differin Gel or Cream. Use 4-6 nights per week, micro needle every 3-4 weeks. If you use > 1.5 mm you WILL need local numbing cream and antibiotic ointments. Expect bleeding. This is normal. 4. If you can budget for it, do PRP after Infini RF, then use the topicals.Just remember you get what you pay for, there is a marked difference between a 100 buck needling device, compared to a 70k machine with $ 120 in disposables performed by a Specialist. I do however believe you will benefit from your decision, better than not doing anything at all. Will be doing a video on HOME treatments in the next few months. All the bestDr Davin Lim Laser DermatologistBRISBANE, Australia
