Can a BBL and mommy makeover cause a TIA four weeks later?

Question

I had liposuction and BBL (along with mini tummy tuck and breast lift). Four weeks later, I exhibited all the signs of a transient ischemic attack (TIA). I was dizzy, had a headache, my whole body felt numb, and I was very, very confused. It came on suddenly. My husband took me to the emergency room and while I was in the examine room, it all suddenly cleared. Is it possible that this was caused by the fat transfer involved with BBL?

Kate. I appreciate your concern and you should be fully evaluated by your medical doctor. Most board-certified plastic surgeons prefer to stage that many procedures. It is safer and better for your recovery. BBL and Tummytuck operations each carry a higher incidence of blood clot formation and possible harm or blockage of the lungs.  Theoretically, it can also cause TIA. Performing them simultaneously statistically increases the chances of this occurring. Best of luck.

Without knowing more information it's difficult to determine if the TIA was related to your surgery, but it is possible.  A complete work up is needed to be sure you do not have clots present.  Be aware of and discuss the warning symptoms with your doctor.

Thank you for your question.  It is unlikely that the fat transfer for the BBL would cause a TIA 4 weeks after your surgery.  Fat embolism usually manifests early and would more likely cause respiratory problems. A complete examination by your family doctor and/or a neurologist is in order.
