I am 24 male (6ft, 190 lbs) with relatively high cholesterol levels. Is accutane out of the questions when it comes to clearing my back and facial acne? Blood tests (LDL: 152, Cholesterol: 264, Triglyceride: 321) Thanks!
Answer: Accutane and Cholesterol There are a few questions to be answered here:1. Did you take your test fasting or did you forget and eat?2. Do you have a family history of high cholesterol that needs to be looked at if your tests are accurate.3. What are the risks of increasing your already high lipids compared to the happiness you will get with clearing your acne with accutane? These, especially number 3 should be discussed with your dermatologist -- and not in a 2 minute visit. Fine a doctor who will take the time to go over these issues with you.

Answer: Accutane and high triglycerides Hi there, with regards to your cholesterol pane, isotretinoin (accutane) can elevate the level of triglycerides. Was your blood test obtained during a fasting state (no food or liquids except water in the 8 hours prior to the test)? If you were not fasting, you may have a false elevation of your triglyceride levels. If you were fasting, your triglyceride level is elevated. While it is not an absoulte contraindication, there are several considerations for taking isotretinoin in the setting of elevated triglycerides that you should discuss with your dermatologist. These may include dietary modification (to avoid foods that may contribute to elevated triglycerides), starting isotretinoin at a low dose, and close follow up of blood test. You should also know the warning signs for having elevated triglycerides, one of the most concerning, being pancreatitis. I recommend that you consult with your dermatologist to determine the most effective and safe treatment for you.
