Hi. Its been 2yrs since my tummy tuck & muscle rep& it has never stopped itching. Intially it was a light external itch that could be rubbed lightly or controlled with Benadryl. At about 8 months post opt internal itch began. Its a deep under the skin annoying itch. It cant be scratched. Its like the muscle itches under the skin. Flexing my abs repeatedly can sometimes relieve the itching. The itching comes and goes. I experience this at least once a week. Is this normal? Wat shld i do
Answer: Itching If this itching is in a specific area, you could try some nerve block to see if you can get relief. it appears that one of your cut sensory nerves tried to grow back through scar tissue and is blocked. Other things can also be tried if blocks fail. Please discuss this with your surgeon.

Answer: Internal itching Dear msprissy1, I understand your concern. However, without a proper assessment, it would be difficult to determine what is wrong. It is best that you visit your plastic surgeon for further assessment or ask for a second opinion. Only after a thorough examination, you can get proper recommendations and advice. Answer: Itching This deep itching can occur as healing continues with the nerves deep to the skin surface. Some patients may find help using cool compresses. You can also consider medication if it is particularly bothersome. I encourage you to discuss your concerns with your surgeon.

Answer: Internal itching after tummy tuck 2 years postop - Is this normal? Itching around the surgical site after a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) can be a common occurrence during the healing process. However, persistent or intense itching that occurs two years after the surgery might be worth discussing with a medical professional. There are several potential reasons for itching after a tummy tuck: 1.) Healing Process: Itching is a common part of the healing process as the nerves regenerate and the tissues heal. It can take time for the body to fully recover and for nerve endings to settle down. 2.) Scar Tissue Formation: Scar tissue can sometimes cause itching as it forms and matures. This is particularly true during the first few months after surgery, but it might continue to be an issue to a lesser degree even after a longer period of time. 3.) Skin Sensitivity: The skin around the surgical site might remain sensitive for an extended period after surgery, leading to itching or discomfort. 4.) Dry Skin: Dry skin can exacerbate itching. Make sure you're keeping the area well moisturized and hydrated. 5.) Allergic Reaction: Occasionally, a reaction to dressings, creams, or other products used during or after surgery could cause itching. 6.) Infection or Complications: While uncommon, itching could potentially be a sign of an infection or another complication. If the itching is accompanied by redness, warmth, swelling, discharge, or other concerning symptoms, it's important to consult a doctor. It's always best to consult with your surgeon or a medical professional who is familiar with your specific case. They can provide personalized advice and determine whether further evaluation or treatment is necessary. If the itching is causing you discomfort or worry, don't hesitate to seek medical attention.

Answer: Skin sensation after a tummy tuck A full tummy tuck will create a significant area of numbness on your lower abdomen. There will be some nerve regeneration that grows into the area over the next few years but that numb skin can give people different sensations. Your best option is to learn to ignore it. Best, Mats Hagstrom, MD
