I’m looking to have a revision rhinoplasty in Mexico City. I found a doctor I like and is certified by the ASPS…does this mean they are automatically board certified by ABPS? When I go to the ABPS website I can not find them there…but they claim to be “board certified” in the US just not specific to what board. When I asked this Q they sent me a picture of him on the ASPS webpage. When I click on his image in the ASPS there is nothing under “board certification” while other surgeons do
Answer: Board certification People play games with titles and certifications all the time. This includes joining organizations like the American board of cosmetic surgery, which requires no residency training. People are either certified or not certified by the American board of plastic surgery. If the person‘s name is not on the registered then they are not certified. They may be certified in another medical specialty in the United States, and they may be board-certified in plastic surgery in Mexico by Mexican standards. Board certification should be an absolute minimum, but is hardly sufficient to confirm that someone has skill and experience. I generally do not recommend people travel long distances for elective surgical procedures. Anybody considering rhinoplasty surgery should have in person consultations with multiple providers before selecting a surgeon. These are complex procedures with a high revision rate that are difficult to do well on a consistent basis. Provider selection is critical for consistent quality outcomes when it comes to rhinoplasty surgery. Rhinoplasty surgery is considered one of the more complex and difficult procedures and most plastic service will agree with this. I do not believe you can properly select providers by using your computer or cell phone. Finding the right provider requires having multiple in person consultations. Best, Mats Hagstrom, MD
