I'm using DR. Pen micro-needling at home to treat my melasma. My skin is Fitzpatrick Skin Type III. I'm using 36 pins with a depth of 1.5 to 2um. Would you please let me know if it is helpful to apply hydroquinone during or right after the micro-needling procedure? what is your suggestion to apply during and after micro-needling to help with melasma?
Answer: Treatment for Melasma using micro-needling and Hydroquinone Micro-needling helps with collagen production and skin turn over so it can be helpful in treating Melasma. Melasma in general is challenging to treat and control hence often, combination treatment utilizing different modalities is can help. Hydroquinone one of the best treatment available for pigmentation issues however, care must be taking to avoid unwanted side effects such as PIH (post inflammatory hyper-pigmentation). Hydroquinone can be applied before and after micro-needling. It’s important to use a formulation or brand that will not irritate your skin. Generally you want to use hydroquinone for a short period of time 6-12 weeks and then switch to other products that contain vitamin C, Arbutin, Azelaic acid, to maintain and prevent recurrence. Most important with problems like Melasma is sunscreen and avoiding excessive sun exposure to the area. It’s best to see a specialist in the field for evaluation and treatment and get recommendations for maintenance tailored toward your skin type and needs. All the best.
