The human face is asymmetric. When individuals see midline structures, as being uneven, it’s usually not the midline structure that has the asymmetry, but rather the rest of the face. Asymmetry is normal, and the human brain is accustomed to seeing it. During embryological development, the two sides of the face develop independently from each other, and eventually fuse in the midline. If you take computer-generated symmetrical faces and look at them carefully, you’ll see that they have an eerie, unnatural, and in many ways unattractive appearance. Your lip is symmetry is most likely based on facial skeletal structure, which is a symmetric as baseline. This is extremely common and ALL people have facial asymmetry. Any attempt at simplistic soft tissue manipulation, such as the use of Fillers or botox, will not fix the primary asymmetry, which is based on bone structure, and instead create a secondary soft tissue asymmetry. I suggest you except your face as being normal and recognize that everyone around you has similar degrees of asymmetry. Avoid the temptation to try to treat this. Best, Mats Hagstrom, MD
