Is excessive bleeding during lipoma removal bad?

Thank you for sharing your question. As you can imagine excessive bleeding during any procedure is concerning.  Typically lipomas do not result in this.  I would make have the physician explain the cause to help understand whether further testing is needed.  

There are several possibilities.  One is that it is not a lipoma but a vascular mass.  Another is that you bleed more from taking aspirin or other blood thinning drugs.

Thank you for your question and post. There are several reasons why this may have happened. Aspirin and many other medications can cause prolonged coagulation. Even minor surgery can cause bleeding. Alternatively, you may have some genetic or functional platelet or coagulopathy that has not been noticed before. Probably a good idea to have some blood tests done and evaluated, and then re-approach the lipoma for excision. Hope this helps.Benjamin J. It is certainly reasonable to do some lab work to see if you are at an increased risk of bleeding. Also avoiding NSAIDs, aspirin, and fish oil near the time a surgery is a good idea to reduce bleeding. Most likely there was a large vessel near or in the lipoma that was cut during the attempted removal. If your labs don't show any increased bleeding risk then another attempt at removal can be undertaken.
