I'm getting a breast lift & implants; I'm on phentermine. How long before surgery do I have to stop taking phentermine?

Diet pills are stimulants and must be stopped well before general anesthesia. I have had recommendations of anywhere from 2 to 4 weeks ahead of the surgery by various anesthesia people.. Be sure to tell your surgeon  you are on these medications. You do not want a last minute cancellation or worse a cardiac complication. Good luck.

Stimulants may affect the heart during surgery. I believe that stopping a good two weeks before surgery would allow for a safer anesthetic experience. I usually recommend patients to stop phenteramine 2-4 weeks before surgery . Patients can resume their medications after surgery. There are other medications that your surgeon may want you to stop ; aspirin, ibuprofen etc. You should speak to your plastic surgeon and follow their recommendations.

Thank you for your inquiry.  The risk of Phentermine or any other stimulant is that your heart may be more prone to develop a harmful rhythm or rate during surgery and can also make it more difficult for the anesthesiologist to treat the condition if it happens.  Most anesthesiologists will recommend stopping the Phentermine for a minimum of 2 weeks.Make sure your plastic surgeon knows you are taking the medication so it can be discussed with the anesthesia team at his/her surgery center.  They will definitely have a protocol as to how long you should be off of the medication.Remember that a breast augmentation and lift is an elective procedure so all precautions to keep you safe should be followed.
