Please find below my peer reviewed article published in the American Academy of Cosmetic Orthodontics.---------------------------------------------------------------------------This article has been Peer Reviewed Product Review: AcceleDent by Steven Davidowitz, DDS, FICOI AcceleDent is a noninvasive Class II medical device manufactured in the US by OrthoAccel Technologies (Houston, Tex.). The instrument is FDA-cleared and promises to accelerate tooth movement by up to 50% during orthodontic treatment. I utilize the device on my Invisalign patients from teenage cases through adult cases. AcceleDent uses a unique “SoftPulse” technology to deliver tiny vibrations that, when combined with orthodontic force, stimulate the patient’s bone biology at a cellular level to rapidly accelerate bone remodeling activity. The instrument is used strictly as a complement to orthodontic treatment; many of my patients have reported that it provides significant relief from the discomfort associated with orthodontic forces as well. AcceleDent is hands free and easy to use, and is compatible with all forms of orthodontic treatment. The instrument does not interfere with my treatment philosophy, treatment plan (other than possible scheduling considerations caused by accelerated tooth movement), or appliances in any way. AcceleDent simply complements my Invisalign work on a daily basis and helps patients complete treatment significantly faster, with less discomfort. The prescription is single use per day, and it is recommended that patients try to use the instrument at approximately the same time each day. (This protocol supports optimized biologic response with each use, and also assists patients in developing a habit of compliance.) Multiple uses per day are not advised, and I cannot find literature on results beyond a single use per day, as these have not been researched. The instrument utilizes a mouthpiece to deliver the vibrations during treatment. There are three different profiles of mouthpieces: Open Bite, Deep Bite, and Flat Bite, in both large and small sizes (for a total of 6 mouthpiece options). A single mouthpiece is dispensed to the patient along with the “patient kit” (base unit), and should typically last the duration of treatment. The patient uses the instrument with his or her aligner in place, as an orthodontic force on the teeth is needed for the stimulation to occur. Clearly, patients are responsible for their participation during the course of treatment. However, the patient’s performance in this regard can be monitored using the data tracking feature built into the instrument, which logs the number of uses during the treatment. The patient compliance data can be accessed for review by connecting the USB port of the AcceleDent to the doctor’s PC. While there are numerous alternatives to achieve an acceleration of orthodontic movement, but all other techniques (to my knowledge) involve some form of invasive procedure. AcceleDent is noninvasive and delivers rapidly accelerated tooth movement for my patients in a safe, convenient, and often pain-relieving experience, in the comfort of their own homes at whatever time of day is convenient to them. While each Invisalign aligner is generally designed to be worn for 2 weeks, I find that when patients use the AcceleDent modality, the time is often reduced to just 7 days. I do monitor my accelerated Invisalign cases more closely and more frequently in order to assess proper tracking. I have had the need, in cases that are not tracking well, to increase the days a patient wears the aligners while using the AcceleDent. Based on my experience, I can recommend the use of AcceleDent to shorten the treatment time and reduce discomfort for the vast majority of Clear Aligner patients.
