Can capsular contracture be caused by taking MSM, glucosamine, and Vitamin C?

Question

Scheduled for primary BA in a few weeks. I read that these supplements may actually cause capsular contracture? I can't find reference to this anywhere but on the website of a single plastic surgeon, so I'm willing to bet that it's theoretical, not clinically validated. Either way, I'm very concerned, as I've been dependent on all 3 (plus collagen powder) for arthritis for years. My own PS doesn't object & even cleared my use of them right up to surgery but I'd like to hear from other docs too.

Thank you very much for your question.  There is no evidence that nutritional supplements cause or contribute to capsular contracture formation.  At this time the exact mechanism is incompletely understood, but the most commonly accepted theory is that low grade inflammation secondary to bacterial contamination and biofilm formation on the implant after implantation is the most likely inciting factor.  It is most likely more complex than that including  a role for host biological factors that have not been indentified at this point.  Follow your surgeon's instructions. Best wishes.

I have not heard any link to capsular contracture and supplements.You have no reason to be concern takig those supplements.

The exact cause is not know but recent studies suggest it may occur due to low level contamination of the pocket. How this happens is also unclear.

The causes of capsular contraction are not totally understood at this time, however, there is no valid scientific evidence that the supplements and vitamins that you routinely take have any role in producing capsular contraction. You should discuss what medications, supplements, and
vitamins you are taking, both prescription and over the counter, with your
plastic surgeon and have him or her decide what you should and should not be
taking. Your surgeon should be certified by the American Board of Plastic
Surgery and ideally a member of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic
