Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an effective tool for evaluation of facial and gluteal region fillers with delineation of their imaging features and related potential complications. Differentiation between fillers and neoplastic or granulomatous lesions could be accurately done with MRI. Using this tool enables us to see exactly where the dermal filler is present.Because dermal fillers are made of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring skin compound, they are naturally dissolved by your body over a period of 6 – 18 months.

The vast majority of fillers have some hyaluronic acid component; another common filler is calcium hydroxylapatite. However, an MRI is not going to give identifying information as to the type of filler. I would still go along with he advice of your new injector in having the fillers dissolved and starting from scratch. If the fillers do not dissolve, they may be some form of permanent filler, which are far more complicated to remove.

An MRI could detect presence and location of fillers, but not the type. You may be better off contacting the injector who placed them. Your records should indicate the type of fillers, location and amount injected. If they are HA fillers, which there are many, they can be dissolved with hyaluronic acid.
