When should I see results while taking Accutane? (photos)

Question

I've been on Accurane 60 mg for about 6 weeks now. Since then, I've noticed a lot more cystic acne around my cheeks and nose. I wanted to know if my skin would be even toned after treatment. Plus, it is red. I understand my skin was red before, so I was also wondering if I will be red after my treatment?

Accutane is a go-to medication for patients with recalcitrant cystic acne. It can reduce pore size and also reduce sebum production in your skin, making it less oily; and in turn, dryer. Accutane can be used to control acne, but patients receiving the medication should be carefully monitored. In terms of skincare, always wear an appropriate sunscreen and reduce direct sun exposure. In my patients, I recommend a good ceramide moisturizer such as Elevase whenever they are on Accutane. This will keep the skin hydrated and reduce the oiliness of the skin that is associated with oil-based moisturizers.

The initial 4-6 weeks on accutane are often the toughest as the skin is dry and the acne often gets worse. This is expected in most patients especially at the dose your on. The redness will be persistent for most of the treatment course but will get better. You skin will be great by 12 weeks into treatment and then maintain the effect till the end of the treatment. When you have severe, cystic acne the skin will get much worse before it gets better. This is normal and to be expected. About 8-12 weeks you should start seeing significant improvements. Some of the redness has to do with dryness and sun. So make sure you are using a good, thick daily moisturizer and sun protection while taking Accutane. "This
