What is the risk that I've moved Botox around after dermaplaning?

I just used a facial razor to dermaplane my face 8 days after receiving Botox in my forehead, glabella, and chin. There's mixed opinions online about when is okay to do this... some say a week and others two. What is the risk that I've actually moved the product around?

You’re very unlikely to have affected your Botox results by dermaplaning eight days after treatment, but this was a great question to ask. Botox typically binds to the muscle receptors within 24 to 72 hours, and by day 7, it should be fully settled and no longer at risk of migrating. Dermaplaning with a facial razor is considered a superficial treatment that doesn’t reach the depth where Botox works, so unless you were applying deep pressure directly over the injection sites, it shouldn’t cause any issues. Most providers recommend avoiding facial treatments for the first 24 to 48 hours post-Botox, and by one week out, gentle skincare treatments like dermaplaning are generally considered safe.

While we do recommend patients wait 2 weeks after getting botox to do any sort of facial manipulation such as microneedling, facials, gua sha, etc, 8 days is typically safe for something as light as dermaplaning. The likelihood of any product moving around with such a superficial treatment is quite small. It looks like it has now been 4 days since you posted your question- I hope all is still well! It is generally recommended to wait at least 24 to 48 hours after receiving Botox injections before undergoing dermaplaning. This waiting period allows the Botox to settle into the targeted muscles and reduces the risk of the treatment being displaced by the mechanical action of dermaplaning. Since it's been 8 days for you, you should be totally fine.

No need to worry about facial manipulation 8 days following Botox injections.  You can even have a massage if you choose to do so and, therefor, dermaplaning is completely safe.

While there are differing opinions about when it's safe to resume normal skincare routines after receiving Botox, most medical professionals recommend waiting at least 24 to 48 hours before engaging in any activities that may affect the treated area. This includes dermaplaning, as the physical manipulation of the skin could theoretically move the Botox around before it has had a chance to fully bind to the nerve endings.

However, 8 days after receiving Botox, it's likely that the product has already taken effect and bound to the nerve endings. The risk of moving the Botox around at this point is generally considered minimal.

Still, some precaution is advised. It's possible that dermaplaning could cause minor irritation or inflammation in the treated area, which might impact the appearance of the Botox results.
