Can I get a BBL with a heart condition ( cardiomyopothy)?

Question

Two yearseparate ago I was diagnosed with cardiomyopothy.. I don't have any symptoms or has never been hospitalized due to the condition. When my ejection fraction was at 21% I was cleared for a hysterectomy. Now that my heart is stronger he won't clear me because it's an elective surgery and made a statement saying that if I was getting a gallbladder taken out then it would be different. Should I get a second opinion?

Hi and thanks for the question. This question is best answered by your cardiologist and current PS. However since this is elective surgery, you do have to be very careful before having anything done which could cause any stress on your heart. Best of Luck- Dr Hardy

All operations have complications, some serious, even in healthy people. BBL is an "I want" not an "I need" operation and involves significant fluid shifts / the placement of large amounts of tumescent fluid in your fat and the removal of large volumes of fluid (and fat). This is both traumatic and strenuous to the body with the heart having to be revved up and work in full capacity. If the heart cannot keep up you are likely to go into heart failure with fluid in the lungs and liver as well as suffer a heart attack. The ejection fraction, the fraction of volume pumped by the heart each time needs to be normal and yours is not. A normal EF is 50 to 75% or twice to a third of your stated EF. this would make you a very high risk for surgery. Ultimately the decision is yours and your Informed Plastic surgeon. Personally I don't think a fuller rounder butt is worth dying for. Peter Aldea MD

Your cardiologist may or may not be correct.Sometimes it's not a matter of being right or wrong but rather a subjective assessment.The decision to undergo any surgical procedure comes down to risk versus benefit.Some cosmetic procedures can have a life altering impact while others have a minor impact or not give much overall improving quality of life at all.cardiomyopathy can potential he put people at serious risk for life-threatening complications or may be of minor significance.The diagnosis by itself is insufficient to make any kind of definitive statement.Perhaps your cardiologist has an overall biased against cosmetic surgery or has your overall best interest at hand truly believing that this is an undue unnecessary risk that is not warranted.Regardless it will be your cardiologist or some other cardiologist who makes the decision in conjunction with a plastic surgeon.If moving forward with your Brazilian is very important to you, then consider getting a second opinion from another cardiologist.No one should put their life at jeopardy for a minor cosmetic enhancements.no plastic surgeon should let their patients undergo unnecessary risks either.Best,Mats Hagstrom M.D.
