Thank you for your question. It would be best to follow the post op instructions that your doctor provided. In general, petroleum jelly ointment products help heal the wound quicker. It would be likely be ok to put A & D ointment but would not be sufficient if you want to heal the wound quicker with the best scar possible,. I hope this helps.
The key to healing and protecting a wound (from a mole removal for example) is hygiene and hydrations. I generally recommend vaseline or aquaphor which are both ointment-based and very hydrating. If I am concerned for any infection, I will recommend an antibiotic ointment. If this was a routine mole removal and the wound is clean, it shouldn't need antibiotic ointment. If A & D ointment is what you have, it should do just fine.
