In my practice, my board certified anesthesiologist's policy is to remove them and/or dark nail polish as they can interfere with monitoring oxygen levels. Check with your board certified plastic surgeon for his/her policy as they can vary.
Dear Briip17..,every plastic surgeon has his own preoperative protocol which he recommends to his patients. I would suggest you to discuss this with your plastic surgeon.Daniel Barrett, MDCertified, American Board of Plastic SurgeryMember, American Society of Plastic SurgeryMember, American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery
Some facilities ask patients to not have acrylic nails for elective surgical procedures. The reason is that acrylic nails can interfere with oxygen sensing equipment that is put over the fingertips. It varies from institution to institution. Often they request patients not have acrylic nails but will usually do the surgery regardless. It’s worthwhile asking your plastic surgeon during or after a consultation if you have surgery scheduled.Best, Mats Hagstrom MD
