My daughter had Botox in her hands two weeks ago. How long will the weakness last?

She is experiencing weakness in her hands .She is a softball player and is having trouble gripping the ball .How long can this last and a there anything we can do to speed recovery up .

Botox for hyperhidrosis in the palms should not have the side effect of weakening the muscles, as it is injected very superficially. Most likely, your daughter’s Botox injections were placed too deep or the dose was too high. Unfortunately, there is no way to speed up the process of Botox wearing off; your daughter will simply have to wait it out. It may take a week, but could take 3-4 months for the weakness to wear off completely.

Botox can impair the muscles of the hands and that should have been discussed with you prior to injection especially if your daughter is an athlete.  Unfortunately the only thing you can do is wait till the botox wears off in 3-4 months.  It will get better in the next 4-6 weeks and start loosening up more.  Best, Dr. Emer.

Thank you for your question and I am sorry to hear of your Botox side effect for excessive sweating of the palms.  Unfortunately this is a complication of injections, and typically the result of injections placed too deeply.  Most patients will see steady improvement in their hand strength starting at about 3-4 weeks, and depending on the amount of Botox placed it may last for a couple of months. This is a problem caused by the Botox being placed too deep. This shouldn't happen. It can take up to 3 months for this to resolve completely. Further treatments should be done elsewhere. See lin on how I do it near painlessly.

The purpose of Botox is to weaken or paralyze muscle. The hand weakness will last as long as the Botox is present and active.

Hello Domi29,The effects of Botox will peak around 10 days, so the weakness should not be be getting any worse.  However, the effects of Botox will last about 3 months in most patients.  Some patients are a little longer and some a little less time.  There is nothing that will speed up the process of it going away.  I hope this helps and good luck.
