In recent years, medical science has elucidated what goes on under and within the skin that leads to the development of flattening of our cheeks, sinking of our temples, and the development of sagging and jowl formation around the mouth, jawline and in the laugh line (NLF) regions of our face. And what we have learned is that the unlike in the past when we thought that all these changes were due to skin laxity (looseness), we now know that they are largely due to loss of volume in the fat pads, bone, and even muscle layers below the skin. When we mistakenly believed that looseness was the culprit, we went ahead with expensive, aggressive surgical facelifts, necklifts, etc. that entailed cutting out the "excess" skin, sewing things together and long downtimes. And in many cases, stretching skin over bone (without restoring the underlying volume) left people looking "porcelainized" and artificial. This all underwent a dramatic change when about fifteen years ago, we discovered the enormously important contribution of volume loss to facial aging. With the development of injectable volumizing fillers, like Voluma XC, we could now lift, reshape, and recontour cheeks; straighten jowly jawlines; create more youthful, heart-shaped faces; fill sunken temples; and elevate the marionette lines at the angles of the mouth. And each of these could be done in about ten minutes with immediate results and little to no significant downtime. Pencil thin lips--also a product of age-related volume loss--could similarly be restored in this way to more youthful fullness. Make sure that you consult with a board certified aesthetic physician with experience and expertise in nonsurgical facial rejuvenation and be certain to ask to see his/her personal before and after photos before agreeing to proceed. Best of luck.
