Routinely, plastic surgeons stop at 5000 cc. However, if you want to go over that and will be hospitalized afterwards then that should be appropriate.

Suctioning more than 5,000ml causes fluid to shift in and out of the blood vessels in a way that makes it safer to be monitored after surgery.

If you do not want to take on the increased risk, you could choose to separate the areas of liposuction into two surgeries done as an outpatient. Or you could lose weight to make the overall volume of liposuction lower. Many of my patients who have struggled with weight have had success with medications like Ozempic.

Taking off more than 5 Liters of Liposuction Fat Aspirate is considered large volume. The recommendation is that when more than 5 liters is removed, you should be monitored. I have taken off over 15 L at a time with the patient prescheduled to spend the night in the hospital and planned blood transfusion. I have performed hundreds, if not thousands of Large Volume liposuction cases. Taking off 5, 6, 7 or even 8 Liters of aspirate has never been a problem. Going beyond 8 Liters, about 20-30% of patients will need blood transfusions and over 11 Liters, most will need a transfusion. When doing liposuction as an outpatient, I will not go beyond 8 liters and in patients who I estimate over 4 liters, I send them all home with a private duty nurse for the night with an IV and Foley in place! Always safety first!
