Botox is very effective at reducing the size and bulk of the masseter muscle and for creating a slimmer facial appearance in a safe and predictable manner. As the Botox remains active in the muscle, the muscle will slowly reduce in size as it is unable to contract. Serial treatments allow further reduction in muscle size.
Thank you for your question. Botox or Dysport can be a very effective way to contour the jaw line by reducing the masseter shadow through the outer jaw skin. In addition, it can reduce symptoms of jaw clenching or grinding of teeth at night time. This is an advanced technique that requires a strong understanding of the underlying anatomy. Some side effects can results in some very unintented effects. This can include affecting the smile due to diffusion of the Botox into neighboring smile muscles. Over treatment can also overweaken your jaw muscles making it harder to chew food and causes your jaw muscles to relax too much when you sleep. The injection technique does vary by physical exam and the goals of the treatment. Facial contouring goals may change the injection sites themselves to affect different portions of the masseter as well as the dose. The strength of the masseters can be felt by palpation and also helps me to determine dosing. In general, I start with 15- 25 units of Botox (OR 50-75 units of Dysport) per side for most patients. If they have very strong masseters, then I may increase the dose, but more commonly ask them to return in three weeks for a touch up. Once you get the desired result, I let patients know that future treatments may require less to maintain the look or the jaw clenching symptoms, especially if they get treated as soon as they notice the symptoms return. This can be as soon as three to four months, but in some cases, patients report that it lasts six months or more. I find it depends on the dose we use and how many times we have done the procedure as the duration may lengthen for patients that repeat it regularly.
Using neuromodulators like Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin can help reduce the size of a strong-appearing jawline by relaxing the Masseter muscle on both sides of the cheeks. By doing so it will make the lower face looking much softer in appearance.
Yes. In people with a wide lower face resulting from a hypertrophic masseter, Botox can be a very nice non-surgical option to slim and refine the lower face. However, this only works in good candidates who have excess facial width due to a prominent masseter muscle. This won't work for someone with a small masseter with excess skeletal width. Please seek a consultation with an expert physician Botox injector. I hope this information is helpful for you.Stephen Weber MD, FACSDenver Facial Plastic Surgeon
Botox injections into masseter make the muscle smaller and the jaw look narrower. It is a very popular procedure for patients with wide jaws due to a thick masseter muscle.
The masseter muscle can cause the appearance of a wide or square jaw that can be improved with BOTOX® Cosmetic. It works by causing a weakening or atrophy of the muscle to diminish the bulk and thereby create an improvement in the dimensions of the jaw. It may take 2-3 treatments to achieve the maximum result.
Yes, Botox has been proven to be very effective in treating the masseter muscle. An overactive masseter muscle can eventually lead to an enlarged and square appearance. Botox injections to the masseter muscle can cause the muscle to stop overworking and become slimmer.
Yes, Botox, Dysport or Xeomin can help with reducing the appearance of the masseter muscle and make the face appear softer. Women who have a square shape of the face or a full appearing jaw line benefit from this treatment nicely.
Dr. Yoo's answer and his video provide a great explanation to this question. I would add that you need to be sure you are finding a provider with expertise in this area. Often the top providers of Botox in an area will also be the most experienced. Ask to see how many of these procedures the provder has performed.
Dear mandyli:Yes, Botox works well for thick or hypertrophic masseter muscles. It is most important to have yourself evaluated by a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon or Facial ENT to examine all your facial features and make recommendations as masseter muscle relaxation is only one option to provide improved balance to your face. The masseter is a rectangular muscle with varying thickness, so the placement of the Botox is important too.Good luck!
EEG leads will not interfere with the Botox you had 8 days ago. You will want to avoid any manipulation to your face for 24 hours post injection. Best,
It is typical to avoid compression and excessive activity for 24 hours following botox injection. At 6 days, you have nothing to worry about. The results from the botox will not be affected.
Thank you for your question. The fine lines on your forehead is caused by strong muscle action (glabellar muscles) underneath. When the muscle is relaxed using neuromodulators like Botox, the fine lines will get softer. As you continue the treatment and have a regular regimen, these lines will ...
