How is a Breast Lift performed? Breast Lift (Mastopexy) is a cosmetic surgery performed by Dr. Lockwood, which involves the removal of excess skin from the breast. There are different incision methods available depending on the amount of lift that is needed. If you have smaller breasts or minor sagging, Dr. Lockwood would use something called the “concentric” method. This requires fewer incisions and less scaring. Incisions would be made around the areola, and the excess skin around the areola would be removed, in a kind of doughnut-shaped pattern. The nipple and areola are lifted and the skin outside the incision is brought up and sutured to the areola. This method is often performed in conjunction with a breast augmentation. This would add volume and give your breasts a fuller appearance. If your breasts are larger or have a greater degree of sagging, Dr. Lockwood would perform a vertical breast lift. This method has a larger scar that looks similar to a lollipop leading some to call this the “Lollipop Lift”. Incisions would be made around the areola, and just below, in a “V” shape leading towards the breast crease. The two sides are brought together, the nipple is moved to a higher position, and all the incisions are sutured back together. What’s the recovery period after a Breast Lift? As with most cosmetic surgeries, you will need to take time to recover. The recovery period will be different for each patient depending on the extent of the surgery, the area of the body, and the patient’s health. You will have bandages on the area for the first few days. There will be swelling, discolouration and bruising, but this should diminish in a week or two. You may return to work and resume daily activities after 1 week. Avoid any straining, bending or lifting for 4-6 weeks.
