Lip Injections: Which Filler is Right for You?

Lip injections or fillers, a type of lip augmentation, are one of the fastest ways to create volume in your lips and reduce lines around your mouth. Call it the Instagram or Kylie Jenner effect. It is also one of the top non-surgical treatments on our site with a RealSelf Worth It Rating in the 90s.

There are several popular, FDA approved treatments to help you put a little more pout in your lips, including Juvéderm's products Volbella and Ultra, and Restylane Silk. Which one is right for you? We talked with RealSelf doctors to find out.

How do lip injections work?

Lip fillers injected by a highly trained medical provider are one of the quickest ways to fuller lips. These minimally invasive treatments can also treat moderate to severe facial wrinkles, including smoothing marionette lines around the mouth.

Restylane Silk and both Juvéderm products, Volbella and Ultra, are temporary hyaluronic acid lip fillers. Hyaluronic acid is a popular ingredient with doctors and dermatologists as it is a naturally occurring substance in the skin known for adding volume, and retaining moisture and softness.

Any lip injection treatment will be customized for you, but most typically last about an hour with your medical provider injecting the solution in and around your lips. Some providers may suggest numbing the area before injections to cut down on pain. Post-injection, it's important not to put too much pressure anywhere on the lips to allow the treatment to evenly settle.

You should see some results immediately, but also remember that there is some swelling involved. Providers on RealSelf recommended waiting at least two weeks to see your final results in this Juvéderm Q&A.

What are the best features of each lip filler?

Deciding which lip filler is best for you should be a discussion between you and your medical provider. However, doctors and dermatologists tend to agree on which filler is best for what situation. Dr. Shaun Patel, a Miami physician, explained the main differences among the top three lip fillers:

"Juvéderm Volbella is a soft gel hyaluronic acid based filler that is great for adding subtle volume to the lips, defining the lip border, and treating lines around the mouth, i.e. smoker's lines," Patel said. "Juvéderm Ultra is thicker than Volbella, and provides a much more noticeable volume.

"Restylane Silk is a softer hyaluronic acid based filler similar to Volbella," Dr. Patel continued. "It is great for adding subtle hydration to the lips and treating perioral lines. I commonly refer to Restylane Silk and Volbella as injectable lip glosses because of the soft and subtle enhancement they provide."

Who is the ideal candidate for each?

Which filler is best for you should be decided by your medical provider. However, providers on RealSelf have some preferences when deciding which treatment is best.

"Older patients [are better with] Restylane and Volbella," said Dr. Michele Green, a New York dermatologist. "Younger patients prefer Juvéderm, as they want more volume."

Dr. Patel agreed: "Juvéderm Volbella and Restylane Silk are great for patients who are new to lip injections or are a little older and looking for a soft, subtle, natural-looking result," he says. "Older patients usually need some volume and definition."

What is the difference in price?

Restylane Silk's average cost is around $675, according to reviews on RealSelf. Juvéderm also averages around $650, but Volbella's average treatment is priced at $575.

As always, price will vary according to your provider, location, areas treated, and the amount of product used.

What results can you expect?

One of the biggest differences doctors see with lip fillers is how long they last. Restylane Silk typically lasts three to six months, with Juvéderm Volbella and Ultra lasting about a year. Providers on RealSelf agree that as technology improves, so will the fillers.

"While Restylane Silk is a a great soft gel filler, I was rarely getting more then six months of results with it in my patients. One reason why Volbella is more popular with my patients then Restylane Silk is that it lasts up to one year because of the innovative Vycross technology from Allergan," says Dr. Patel. "Allergan, I believe, will continue to expand its Vycross line of products and make more of them available in the U.S."
