I have a single, pitted chickenpox scar located vertically just above the space between my eyebrows. I recently saw a doctor who suggested fractionated CO2 laser, possibly combined with a Thulium laser. However, I’ve read many opinions online saying that pitted chickenpox scars don't always respond well to lasers. I’m looking for your professional opinion: Based on the attached photo, what is the best approach to "remove" this scar? Would you recommend lasers (CO2/Thulium), or would something like a filler or subcision be more effective for a depression like this? How many treatments should I realistically expect before seeing a significant difference? I’ve attached a close-up photo for reference. Thank you!

Here’s how I would approach it:

Lasers (Fractionated CO₂, Thulium):
Fractionated CO₂ lasers can resurface the skin, improve texture, and slightly soften the edges of the pit. Thulium or other non-ablative lasers can help with skin remodeling and pigmentation. However, you’re correct that a small, deep pitted scar may not fully “fill in” with laser alone—lasers primarily improve surface smoothness rather than lifting the depression.

Subcision:
Subcision involves using a tiny needle to release the tethered tissue beneath the scar, allowing the skin to lift slightly. This can be very effective for pits that are pulled down by underlying tissue, especially when combined with other treatments.

Filler:
For a single, small depression, a temporary hyaluronic acid filler can provide immediate improvement and smooth out the pit. It’s minimally invasive and can be repeated as needed. Fillers are often combined with subcision for longer-lasting results.

Typical approach:

Subcision ± filler: releases the tether and smooths the depression

Optional laser afterward: improves texture, stimulates collagen, and blends the treated area with surrounding skin

Number of treatments:

At least from the photo provided, the scar appears to be wider and longer than a typical pit scar. As such, subcision would be an appropriate treatment. Had the scar actually been a pit scar, TCA CROSS would have been more appropriate. You would be wise to consult with an experienced, board certified cosmetic dermatologist scar treatment specialist and best of luck. .
