When I was 19, I had a biopsy on my lip to rule out cancer, which fortunately it was not. However, the procedure left me with a raised bump and scar. I am now 49 and would like to explore treatment options to reduce or remove the bump and improve the appearance of the scar.

Here’s a general overview of options:

Laser treatments – Fractional CO₂ or Erbium lasers can soften raised scars and improve texture and color over time. Multiple sessions may be needed for optimal results.

Steroid injections – For scars that are thick or firm, a series of corticosteroid injections can help flatten the bump and reduce redness.

Scar revision surgery – In some cases, a small surgical revision can remove the raised tissue and realign the scar for a smoother appearance. This is especially considered for scars that are long-standing and resistant to non-surgical methods.

Combination approach – Sometimes, a combination of minor surgery followed by laser or other therapies gives the best cosmetic outcome, especially on delicate areas like the lip.

If close-up examination and palpation confirm that this is indeed simply an elevated scar, then the use of intralesional injections of an anti-inflammatory agents, such as triamcinolone has a several decades' long track record of efficacy and safety for flattening hypertrophic and keloid scars.
