A retainer is custom made to very precisely fit your tooth position and shape. Any time dental work, such as a veneer replacement is done, the shape of the tooth will be slightly ( or sometimes, significantly) altered. Because of this the old retainer will not fit as well and a new retainer is often needed. Once in a while the existing retainer can be modified to work, but that would be a compromise!
