Yes! The gummy bear, or highly cohesive gel, implants are available to women younger than twenty-two. That is just a recommendation put forth by the FDA, not a rule. So they are available to our younger patients. It would be considered an off label use of the device, but this will not void the warranty. Good luck!

The two main types of implants are silicone and saline. The shell of the implants can be either textured (which reduces capsular contracture) or smooth. A textured implant sometimes requires a larger incision. The shape of the implant can be either round or tear drop shaped (gummy bear). Both have their advantages and disadvantages.

The different types of implant offer different pros and cons. For instance, the pros of silicone implants are that they look and feel more natural and ripple less.

On the other hand, the pros of saline implants are that they do not require as large of an incision as silicone, less expensive, they have less incidence of capsular contracture (scarring around the implant), one can tell immediately if there is a rupture, the size can be slightly adjusted, and they can be used for women less than 22 years of age.

You should discuss your concerns with a board-certified plastic surgeon and make sure that your surgeon understands your goals.

Thank you for sharing your excellent question.  There are many surgeons willing to place gummy silicone implants into a patient under the age of 22 and I would simply inquire into offices near you.  The age limit was the result of the youngest patient in the implant study being 22, not because of a physiological or safety difference in women younger or older.  Hope this helps.

This would be an off label use, but you can have silicone implants. The FDA considers the usage of silicone breast implants in women younger than 22 as off label and all manufacturers may not issue a warranty covering replacement value should the implants need to be replaced.  Your PS will know whether the manufacturer of the implant you select will still honor the warranty.  

All silicone breast implants are approved by the FDA for patients over the age of 22.  However they may be placed in a woman who is younger than that by a plastic surgeon at the discretion of the doctor "off label".  The plastic surgeon will likely disclose to cut this is "off label" and often have you sign a form confirming this disclosure.  There have been no additional risks or adverse events reported to be associated with having them placed if you're under the age of 22.

Hi there and thank you for your question.  As you are well aware, silicone gel breast implants (including ‘gummy bear’ implants) are FDA approved in the US for patients 22 years of age and older, and saline breast implants are approved for patients 18 years of age and older.  With that said, silicone gel implants can be used for patients younger than 22 for the purpose of breast augmentation with the understanding that this is an ‘off-label’ use.  In these instances, patients are often asked to sign an off-label consent that acknowledges that the use of these implants in this particular case is being done outside of the FDA approved labeling.  For patients with marked asymmetry or congential defects of the breasts silicone gel implants can also be and are commonly used. Since each implant manufacturer has their own company specific warranty, patients should consider the warranty coverage implications if their implants are used off-label as well.  Your best first step would be to seek an in-person consultation with a local Board Certified Plastic Surgeon to discuss your concerns, goals and wishes and to best determine your candidacy for a breast augmentation.  I hope that this helps!!

The correct age to collocate a breast implant is 18 years old. So you will not have a problem getting your gummy bear implants. Go to a board plastic surgeon, so he can help you with your concerns. 

Thanks for the question.  The FDA recommends that patients are 22 years old before receiving silicone implants as a way to try and ensure that a patient is mature enough to make an informed decision about the surgery.  However, that is not to say that someone younger than 22 cannot move forward with the surgery, and is up to the patient (and surgeon).  It is also good to know that you will not be excluded from the implant companies' warranty for their product.  Hope this helps!
