Can Daxxify be used as a Botox alternative for TMJ?

Considering the similarities between Botox and Daxxify, I am wondering if this would be a good alternative to target TMJ? Does one have an advantage over the other?

Hi there, great question. The major differentiating factor between Daxxify and other neuromodulators, like Botox, is that Daxxify uses peptides in lieu of human serum albumin as a stabilizer. The addition of the peptide is also what gives Daxxify its longevity.The use of Daxxify in the masseter muscles for TMJ is technically an off-label use at this time. But the results will be the same as if treatment was rendered using any of the other neuromodulators. Because Daxxify has the potential to last longer I would recommend that you start with a lower dose if you’ve never treated the masseters before. You can always add more, you can’t remove/lessen the effects once it’s been injected &mdash; you don’t want to end up unable to chew your food. I recommend consulting with an injector who has experience with Daxxify for the best outcome!Best of luck!

I agree with expert Joel Cohen MD's answer that Daxxify is currently FDA approved for used in the glabella forehead wrinkles.  "Off label" uses of Daxxify will include treatment of the masseter muscles (TMJ Syndrome) with expected longer lasting effects. Botox and Daxxify are both neuromodulators.  Daxxify is created a bit different which allows its effects to last several months longer than Botox and similar neuromodulators.  Currently it is only FDA approved for use in the glabella.  Other areas would be considered off label use.  See an expert injector for treatment.

I was one of the FDA clinical trial sites for Daxxify. It was recently approved by the FDA specifically for treatment in the glabella. While it very likely will be used in other areas like other neuromodulators have over time, you should really wait until there are at least some studies and experience using it for this specific issue of TMJ.
