My dentist placed 8 crowns, 2 veneers on my teeth. He cut my 4 upper front teeth to the gum line (without warning me!) and placed posts and terrible-looking crowns, when all those teeth just needed new fillings. Please, someone, can those crowns, veneers be taken off now (by a different dentist), and my ruined teeth (stumps and posts) somehow be restored with fillings and bonding (no crowns or veneers)? I live in New York, where can I go with this? I am ready to cry. What is my best option?
Answer: Not really I sympathize with your discontent about your teeth and crowns. There is good news and bad news. The bad news is that once your teeth are prepared for full crowns, there is nothing else permanent other than another crown that can be placed on your teeth. The GOOD news is that however bad you feel your crowns look, in most cases, they can be made to look very nice and natural by a highly trained cosmetic dentist with new crowns. Bonding, composite or fillings will not help your teeth. In the instance that you have a tooth that has had root canal therapy and due to a dark root that cannot be cosmetically helped, an esthetic implant and porcelain crown may be able to be placed. I wish you luck.

Answer: I want to take off crown, veneers. Can my teeth be restored with filling so I don't have to wear crowns, veneers any more. No, unfortunately for you once the teeth have been prepared for either crowns or porcelain veneers there is no going back. I empathize with you that you are so unhappy with the results. My suggestion is to find a very skilled cosmetic dentist to redo the crowns and veneers that you feel are unsatisfactory. Since you live in New York the dentist of the stars there in Manhattan is Dr. Larry Rosenthal and he is very skilled at handling difficult treatments. Understand, of course, that he would most probably charge much more than your original dentist, but having a very nice result would certainly be worth it in the end.

Answer: Replacing Crowns and Veneers While it is technically possible to remove crowns and veneers and replace them with bonding, it's not a reasonable idea and I doubt any dentist would do it. The teeth wouldn't be as strong long term and the bonding would not last as long as what you now have. Once a tooth is prepared for a crown or veneer, it will always need one. I would suggest consultations with one or two other dentists to see what your options are.

Answer: I want to take off crown, veneers. Can my teeth be restored with filling so I don't have to wear crowns, veneers any more. Unfortunately once the teeth have been prepared for crowns they can not be restored with fillings. I would encourage you to seek the opinion of a cosmetic dentist who may be able to offer you encouragement about redoing your existing work in a way that satisfies your desire for a better cosmetic result. It sounds like if the teeth looked more natural you would feel better. Placing composite fillings on these teeth would not satisfy your desire for a better more natural look at this point but the result may be possible with better looking crowns and veneers.

Answer: Don't think of your teeth as "ruined" - find the right dentist to help Having your natural teeth 'prepped' (thin layer of natural tooth enamel removed) for crowns/veneers is not a bad thing -- please don't think of your teeth as "ruined" -- the restorative materials dentists use today can be stronger, more beautiful and more functional than natural tooth material. And without that thin layer of enamel removed, crowns or veneers often look bulky and unnatural. You mention posts being placed, so I'm assuming the teeth had endodontic (root canal) therapy - in which case, crowns are placed to strengthen those treated teeth and prevent future breakage. Composite/filling materials are not appropriate to strengthen the entire tooth structure. If you're unhappy with the aesthetic result of the crowns/veneers, find a qualified reconstructive/cosmetic dentist to re-do them. I recommend scheduling several consultations and asking each dentist you meet to see before and after photos of crowns and veneers they've placed on their own patients. An experienced reconstructive dentist will be proud to show you pictures of their restorative results!
