Having your natural teeth 'prepped' (thin layer of natural tooth enamel removed) for crowns/veneers is not a bad thing -- please don't think of your teeth as "ruined" -- the restorative materials dentists use today can be stronger, more beautiful and more functional than natural tooth material. And without that thin layer of enamel removed, crowns or veneers often look bulky and unnatural. You mention posts being placed, so I'm assuming the teeth had endodontic (root canal) therapy - in which case, crowns are placed to strengthen those treated teeth and prevent future breakage. Composite/filling materials are not appropriate to strengthen the entire tooth structure. If you're unhappy with the aesthetic result of the crowns/veneers, find a qualified reconstructive/cosmetic dentist to re-do them. I recommend scheduling several consultations and asking each dentist you meet to see before and after photos of crowns and veneers they've placed on their own patients. An experienced reconstructive dentist will be proud to show you pictures of their restorative results!
