Can I go to a regular dentist to get a crown?

These are good questions.  If the tooth is in the front and your tooth is black I would definitely go to someone that performs a significant amount of cosmetic dentistry.  These can be tricky cases and the crown can appear dark if the correct techniques and materials are not used to bond in your crown.  Good luck.

If the crown is to repair a broken or disclosed tooth toward the front of your mouth the esthetics can be challenging in which case it is advisable to choose a dentist experienced in matching shades of teeth or who has an in house lab technician to customize the shade of the crown.

Dear Chausaur:Any dentist can make you a crown.  However, as with anything else in life, not all dentists are created equal, and some are better than others.   The specialist in this field is called a prosthodontist.  The prosthodontist is generally a top dental student who gets three or more years out training after dental school to handle complex cases at a higher level.  Usually the prosthodontist will also charge you a higher fee because of his or her expertise.Family, cosmetic, General, holistic dentists are all general dentists who just market themselves differently.  The marketing title generally has no bearing on the price or the quality of the work.The best way for you to evaluate the work is by family and friends' recommendations, and ask to see photos of the work. It will depend upon the level of expertise of your dentist in cosmetic dentistry, the dental lab technician and your expectation of the outcome. A tooth in the back of the mouth is not as crucial as far as matching the color and shape as one in the front. A single front tooth restoration such as a crown is one of the hardest procedure to do in dentistry. I would interview  a few  cosmetic dentists and have them show you the work they have done as far as cosmetic dentistry and make your decision from there.  Best if luck.
