Can you massage too much AND when is the best time to massage?

I am 1 week post op, got my sutures removed today and got the OK to start massages for about a minute twice a day. Anyway, here's my questions: "Can you massage too much? My doc said massage twice a day. Can I massage more, like 4-5x if I have time? Or will that cause problems? Also, when is the best time to massage? I know the MA said 'something' about the shower and after I take ibuprofen or muscle relaxers, but it was a lot to take in for me. Thank you for your answers and time!

I think that you should follow your surgeon's advice. I like patients to massage after a few days, and several times a day.

I have my patients massage their breasts 3- 4 times a day. this should be sufficient too help with prevention of capsular contractures. You shuld follow your plastic surgeons advice.

There are not any studies that indicate massaging too much can cause complications. But with that said I believe over massaging can cause inflammation, and too much inflammation I believe could increase the risks and delay the normal healing process. Every doctor has different massaging recommendations, and they will vary from practice to practice. I recommend my patients spend a total of 10 minutes a day massaging, and I go over 3 specific techniques I prefer them to do. Breaking the massaging up throughout the day will help relieve some of the tightness that occurs as you become more active throughout the day. Example: 5 min in the morning and 5 minutes in the afternoon. I would not take any ibuprofen for atleast the first two weeks following your surgery. Taking those types of medications you can increase your risk for potential bleeding, causing what is known as a hematoma. Like ibuprofen other medications that can thin your blood and cause bleeding are the following...Advil, aspirin, naproxen, supplements, diet pills, medications containing vitamin E, fish oil and herbal supplements.
