Is IPL helpful when treating keloids? (photo)

Question

Hi, I have been in an accident almost 3 years ago and thus having some keloids on my knee. I am using Scaraway scar sheets and it's quite effective for me as it lessens the height of those. I am thinking of using IPL as a treatment, will it help? Is there any side effects or will it make the keloids bigger and worse? Thank you so much for you help.

IPL  and Vascular lasers are good for  hypertrophic scars and early keloids. Your lesions are well developed, thick and large. Various treatments exist such as excision combined with radiation, radiation alone or excision combined with Verapamil and 5-fluorouracil. Find a keloid scar expert. Ask to see photos.

Keloids can be improved with a combination approach of fillers, lasers (pulsed dye/vbeam/yellow) and 5/FU steroids. Surgery with or without radiation is an alternative. I recommend getting a formal evaluation with a scarring expert. Best, Dr. Emer

IPL treatment for your keloids will not help at all. IPL or intense pulse light treatment is useful to treat pigmented and vascular skin abnormalities mostly on the face chest and upper extremities .

IPL is helpful if they are red, and especially if combined with injectable steroids or 5FU.  Fractional CO2 laser is very effective as is low dose superficial radiation.
