About a decade ago I had a filling placed. In 2019, the filling chipped my tooth. I got a pulp cap down in 2019; however, I had sensitivity in the tooth a year ago (2022) I since then have no sensitivity like at all, and there are black lines/dots around my filling. Not sure what those are. Do you think I’ll need a root canal? Is this an urgent matter?

Hello, the black color changes on your tooth are a condition that develops due to the structure we call microleakage at the filling tooth junction boundary and can be passed with a proper polish.
Although temporary cold sensitivity in composite fillings is not important if the filling compatibility is good, if there are conditions such as persistent pain or hot sensitivity in the tooth that does not go away, the possibility of root canal treatment may be considered for this tooth. Against this possibility, it will be useful to perform a procedure called vitality test, which evaluates the vitality of the tooth.

The sensitivity is not the reason for root canal treatment. If you have supontaneous pain, especially at night, then we should do root canal treatment. The sensitivity of your tooth may depends on gingivitis.
