I'm 36yrs old. I've previously had lower jaw surgery followed by under chin lipo and a chin implant which I later had removed. I want to get more definition along my jawline. I've been recommended a platysmaplasty but am wondering if a mini lift would be more appropriate.

Given your previous lower jaw surgery, it is very common to experience localized skin laxity and soft tissue sag, as the bone structure supporting those tissues was reduced. This can often leave the platyma muscle and overlying skin without firm support, potentially creating uneven contours around the chin area.
When deciding between a platysmaplasty (platysmal plication) and a mini neck lift, the main difference lies in the extent of dissection and vector of lift:
Platysmaplasty (Platysmal Plication):This is typically performed through a small submental incision under the chin. It directly tightens the medial edges of the platysma muscle centrally. While effective for submental fullness, its reach is primarily limited to the central under-chin area.
Mini Neck Lift:This approach extends the incision around or behind the ears. Because the platysma muscle is a broad sheet extending from the lower face down to the collarbone, an incision near the ear allows for wider lateral dissection and vector-directed lifting.
If your primary goal is to enhance the definition along the lateral jawline (mandible edge) rather than just addressing central fullness under the chin, a mini neck lift would likely be more appropriate, as it allows for lateral repositioning of the platysma and tightening along the entire mandibular border.
A thorough in-person evaluation will be essential to assess your skin elasticity, tissue thickness, and the degree of bone reduction to determine the most effective surgical plan.

From the one very limited photograph, it appears that you have a combination of fat deposits located both above and below the platysma muscle in your neck. That's why liposuction was ineffective because the majority of the fat is probably located below the muscle. A surgical neck lift procedure can accomplish removal of both compartments of fat, along with a platysma-plasty. You don't need a facelift because you're only 36 years of age in your skin tone should be just fine. This procedure is performed under general anesthesia and usually takes about an hour and a half.
