I just had ThermiSmooth treatment done today, and now there is redness and several bumps under my eyes (Photo)

Thank you for your question and photo.  ThermiSmooth treatment of the skin around the eyes has been a very popular treatment at my practice and gives consistently good results with happy patients.  We do counsel our patients that there is "no down time," meaning, they can apply makeup and not have to worry about flaking skin, persistent redness, etc.  Some redness is universal - everyone has a pink glow immediately after treatment, but this generally resolves within 30-90 minutes.  We have never had a patient with "bumps," as you are now experiencing, but some with more swelling than others.  ThermiSmooth, like all energy-based modalities, gets results because it stimulates tissue healing by initiating an inflammatory response by heating the tissue.  For this reason, some patients may experience temporary swelling (which you appear to have, based on your photo).  Focal areas of increased inflammation will appear as "bumps."  I do not have a good explanation as to why you would have these foci or bumps, which seem to be more pronounced under the right eye.  If you have had dermal fillers placed in this region, that could explain it.  Possibly those areas simply received more heat energy than others.  Regardless of why it happened, this should be very temporary and resolve over time, but is not an allergic reaction to the device.  It is possible, although highly unlikely, that this could be a reaction to the coupling gel that was used with the device, but that still would not explain the bumps.  For now, I recommend "watchful waiting" and if bumps persist more than a couple days, contact the physician and let him or her know your concerns.

I recommend following up with a cosmetic dermatologist for after care recommendations. PDT therapy can calm inflammation. I recommend a combination of lasers, microneedling/prp and skin care. See an expert. Best, Dr. Emer
