Does hydrocortisone after peels help prevent scarring and hyperpigmentation or does it actually inhibit proper healing?

I've heard conflicting things regarding using Hydrocortisone cream after Medium to Deep chemical peels. (I use 1% strength) My Dr said Hydrocortisone right away after chemical peels can help prevent scarring & hyperpigmentation and that you should use it 2-3 x a day immediately after the peel for 3-7 days. But I read that Hydrocortisone actually inhibits proper healing from occuring and that the inflammation after the peel is actually good & needed for maximum results. I'm so confused! Help!

Cortisone creams such as triamcinolone is used twice a day for 2 weeks after medium TCA peels to help prevent scarring, irritation,and discolorations. It gets rid of the redness so much faster and patients are back to work right away.

Chemical peels improve skin through restoration and healing. Inflammation is a necessary and important part of healing, but it is not the primary determinant of the outcome. While I don't routinely recommend steroid cream after a chemical peel, I do use it for patients who seem to have abnormal healing. I do recommend the use of the oral nutraceutical GliSODin , which reduces oxidative stress and has been proven to reduce erythema after skin treatments. This does not compromise the outcome. Every physician who does pills has their own protocol, and I would recommend following your surgeons recommendations as they've come from learning and experience.

After a chemical peel, moisturizing and protecting your skin from the sun are key things to remember. Hydrocortisone could be used if you are having a irritation or an adverse reaction. However, it's not something I suggest on everyone.

Interesting question.After a peel hydration to the skin is essential. Hydrating creams or ointments are the best.Hydrocortisone is a steroid, anti inflammatory, but not typically used after peel treatment. It can also thin the skin if used for prolonged periods.Wide brimmed hat and spf30+ are important for sun protection after peels.Best. Dr Brecht
