Is it OK to use a chemical peel when trying to get pregnant?

Retinols are known to cause birth defects when ingested. Topical preparations as well as the other components of the peel have not been demonstrated safe for a developing child, so they are generally avoided during pregnancy. Microdermabrasion might be a safe alternative resurfacing option while you are pregnant.

The vitamin A derivatives in tretinoin and reticoic acid have been shown to cause significant birth defects when taken orally. Although it has never been shown that topical application alone would cause such defects, these compounds are contraindicated for topical use during pregnancy because it is simply not worth the risk. I would highly recommend avoiding any treatment with retinols while trying because of these risks. You can still consider doing a peel without the retinols.
