Is it normal for my skin to break out a lot after microdermabrasion? (Photo)

Question

I had some acne before microdermabrasion but it was a lot just mostly on my forehead which has mostly gone away just look like red scars now but it’s now the 4th day after micro and my skin has been breaking out mostly on cheeks and jawline and is that normal cause I’ve gotten micro before but I never broke out like this

The microdermabrasion is considered a mechanical exfoliation. If you have any underlying acne it may cause it to come to the surface. It is typically not the treatment itself that is causing acne, but it is clearing out the debris that is already inside the pore.

Hi there. It is not surprising that you broke out after your microdermabrasion treatment, especially people with more sensitive skin may be more prone to this side effect post procedure. Many people have it done to help with their acne. Because of the intensity from the exfoliation, the microdermabrasion will help unclog pores, then releasing the bacteria from the pores. You will see a clearer complexion after just a few weeks.

Thank you for your question. Experiencing acne breakouts after a microdermabrasion treatment is normal, especially if you already had some active acne prior to your treatment. Whenever possible, it’s best to wait until your skin is clear of acne before getting microdermabrasion to avoid aggravating existing acne lesions and spreading the P. acnes bacteria that causes acne. Talk with your provider about the best options to clear your acne before any additional microdermabrasion treatments.

Hello, microdermabrasions are supposed to open up any blocked pores and remove dead skin and sebum. It is common to have a breakout after microdermabrasions because the dermabrasion unblocked the pores and lets any remnants of debris continue surfacing up the skin after it was unclogged causing the breakout. I usually have my patients with severe breakouts return after 2 weeks for another treatment then every month to maintain.
