Hi. Today is my 10th day after my hair trnsplant surgery of 4000 grafts. The donation area is still hurting (and itching) and I have been using pain killer (ibuprofen) constantly to overcome the pain. Is this normal? How long should the pain last? I also need to mention that the shots I had in the donation area during the surgery were extremely painful, I don't know if this has anything to do with the pain I am having now. The donation area seems to be fine. Please see the attached picture. Thank you.

Answer: Donor site pain Hello Ryan,A lot of pain at the donor site is highly unusual, especially on the 10th post-operative day. You should definitely see your doctor as soon as possible. There could be several causes for the pain, especially if accompanied by itching.Itching sometimes goes along with healing after surgery, but it shouldn't be painful. Possibilities to consider include a scalp infection, folliculitis, or an allergic reaction (contact dermatitis) to something you are applying to your scalp, such as a new lotion, shampoo, or polysporin. If you are still using polysporin you should stop (it contains a mixture of antibiotics and you can certainly develop a new sensitivity to it after a few days of use - I've seen it in several patients, and not just for hair transplants). Your donor sites should be closed by now so you don't really need to apply polysporin any more, but you could substitute plain, old fashioned vaseline petroleum jelly instead. Good luck
