Im wondering whether dissolvable stutures are better than regular ones. Is it a good idea I insist on my surgeon using dissolvable s. during breast augmentation ( invisible in an under breast fold) Heartfelt thanks.
Answer: Wounding Hears/ Scars: Information Dear Ms. Maggie123,Thank you for your question.Ultimate appearance of the incision site (scar) is dependent on many factors. My responses:1)Incision position, location and form is based on the patients desire and Surgeons experience. 2)All things aside, final scar results are probably 80% genetic. Which means if a careful skin closure was performed.... how you heal is based on your own body and how your biological parents heal.3)we can modulate healing and hopefully using different pre and post operative modalities:PRE OPERATIVEA) no smokingB) healthy/balanced dietC) vitamins INTRAOPERATIVE/TECHNIQUEA) gentle handling of the tissueB) meticulous, multilayered closure (deeper layers) reducing tissue tension using absorbable sutures, alignment of skin using absorbable sutures and when needed removal sutures.C)correct size and tension of non absorbable sutures in the skin or when indicated use of skin glue (Dermabond is one brand). D)tension free (this is relative.... In abdominoplasty it is the most difficult because we are wanting to get a flat and tight abdominal countour)POST OPERATIVEA)Embrace- a device we put on Abdominoplasty (tummy tucks) incisions several days after surgery. Please go to their web site.B)silicone gel sheeting (new gel is one of several brands)C)pressureD)massageE) lasersF) steroid injections for over healing (hypertrophic scars/keloids)G) rarely superficial radiation (recalcitrant keloids)Please make a appt. with experienced Plastic Surgeon who is Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and ideally a member of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (denoting by membership as having met additional criteria and a focus on Cosmetic Plastic Surgery). My best wishes,I wish you my best and success,R. Answer: Suture type The is no evidence that dissolvable sutures form better scars than removable ones. Go with your surgeon's advice. The vast majority or breast scars heal very nicely in either situation.

Answer: Technique Usually it comes down to surgeon technique, as well as tissue genetics when dealing with scar. I have not seen any advantage of using removable suture.

Answer: Suture type Great question! Wounds are generally closed in multiple layers - the deep layers are traditionally closed using dissolvable sutures, unless a permanent one is needed to create structure or hold tissue in a certain place. The variation comes with the actual skin closure, and many surgeons have different thoughts. Dissolvable sutures create more inflammation and redness as the body has to physically break down the product, thus causing more irritation. Permanent sutures tend to cause less inflammation and redness as the body cannot break this down so your body does not react as much to them. However with permanent sutures, they will need to be removed in the office, whereas the dissolvable ones will go away on their own. Best of luck and hope this information helps!- Dr. Roger Tsai

Answer: Dissolvable Sutures Hello,I would imagine every surgeon on the planet that performs breast augmentation uses various types of dissolvable sutures to close deep layers of tissue, and the vast majority use them for the skin. Some might additionally use removable sutures in the skin too, though.Best of luck!
