Can I go to wisdom teeth removal after 2 weeks of breast augmentation?

Question

My wisdow tooth are not infected but my dentist recommended teeth removal and said that it would be ok if I take antibiotics. I'm still wondering if it still couses a capsular contracture if it's only 2 weeks after my BA?

Thank you for asking. This is an area where opinions may vary and the literature is not the strongest. However, many plastic surgeons and some well known academic plastic surgery institutions do recommend a dose of antibiotics before and one after a significant dental procedure to reduce the chance of breast implant issues. Talk with your board certified plastic surgeon about your specific needs. Best wishes!

I've definitely seen patients develop capsular contracture after having dental work shortly after breast augmentation. If it's urgent you have the procedure, make sure you are on prophylactic antibiotics at the time of the procedure. If it's not urgent, delay the procedure for several weeks, and then still make sure you're on prophylactic antibiotics.Hope this helps - Sam Jejurikar, MD

Great question! Removing your wisdom teeth will produce a bacteraemia ie release bacteria into the blood and these can lodge on your breast implant producing an infection so you should be covered by an antibiotic during and after your wisdom teeth surgery.
Since the wisdom tooth surgery is elective and not an emergency, I would wait until you are 6-8 weeks out from your breast augmentation surgery.

Thanks for your question.
You have obviously done your research and know there is a risk with dental extraction.
The safest option would be to put it off for about 6-8 weeks after your BA and definitively take prophylactic antibiotics before doing so. Your PS should be involved in your decision making.

Interesting question. You have done some home work. It is a theoretical risk, but I agree with you, admitting there is no real data. All considered, I would wait a bit ( 1-2 months) before electively  having oral surgery.All the best,Talmage Raine MD
