I have a right pelvic (ectopic) kidney - can I safely have a tummy tuck?

Hi, I have a 6 cm diastasis recti and am considering a tummy tuck with muscle repair and possibly liposuction. However, I have a right pelvic (ectopic) kidney, and I’m wondering whether this could increase the risks of surgery or cause any complications. Would I still be a suitable candidate for the procedure? Thank you.

A tummy tuck will not in any way effect an ectopic kidney.  Since you have a 6 cm diastasis recti you may need more support with the use of mesh.

Hi there,
Yes, you can very likely still be a good tummy tuck candidate. A 6cm diastasis is exactly the kind of separation a tummy tuck with muscle repair is designed to fix, and a pelvic kidney usually doesn't change that.
Here's why, and what to do about it:
- A tummy tuck repair is done on the front surface of the abdominal muscles. Your kidney sits deeper, behind the muscle wall, so it isn't directly in the area being worked on.- Where a little extra care makes sense is liposuction in the lower belly and pelvis, so your surgeon should know exactly where your kidney sits and keep the lipo in the layer just under the skin.- Expect some basic tests beforehand, like kidney blood work and possibly an ultrasound, especially if you don't have recent imaging. If your kidney function is normal, that's reassuring.- If you've had kidney problems, like infections, blockage or stones, loop in your urologist before surgery.- Be honest with yourself about recovery. A tummy tuck with muscle repair is a real operation, and the first couple of weeks are tough. Plan for help at home.
An in-person exam is needed for personal advice, so bring any kidney imaging you have to a consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon.

Hey there! It would be important to undergo medical clearance to ensure that your kidney function is optimized. Also, imaging would be useful to determine the exact location and the size of the ectopic kidney. This is to ensure that it's not overly enlarged and potentially encroaching on the anterior abdominal wall, which is what would be plicated. 
Otherwise, it should not be directly accepted as ectopic. Kidneys are normally between the abdominal cavity and the back muscles, called the retroperitoneal space, whereas abdominoplasty surgery involves the front or anterior aspect of the abdominal wall.

Your ectopic kidney will not preclude you from being a candidate for a tummy tuck.  Your diastasis will be repaired as part of the tummy tuck procedure.  Depending on your examination, bioabsorbable mesh may be suggested for you for extra tissue support.  See a board certified plastic surgeon near you to learn more.
