Can Juverderm cause a rash on the face?

Question

I had a juvederm injection a couple of months ago into my "Marionette lines" and into my lower lip. About a month later, I developed a severe rash on my face in a butterfly pattern spreading down my chest but not in the area of the injection. The results of the biopsy revealed I had a contact dermatitis v. allergic reaction to medication.. She has given me a steroid cream and that seems to be helping. I have had juvederm before but not with numbing agent. Could the Juverderm injection cause the rash?

it is really rare for fillers to cause rashes but yes they can.  please have an evaluation, oral or IM steroids can help with OTC allergy meds. but a formal evaluation is needed.  Best, Dr. Emer.

Because it happened several weeks after the juvederm I do not think it caused your rash.  Typically if someone is going to have a reaction it will be closer to the time of injection and usually in the area of the injection.

Hello CherylGan,Sorry to hear about your rash.  Juvederm can lead to a rash.  This would usually appear within the first week and should be in the area where the Juvederm was injected.  The description of your rash does not appear to be consistent with where your Juvederm was injected so I would highly doubt that it was the cause.  Your rash also appeared much later than you would expect for a reaction to the filler. I would recommend you follow up with a dermatologist to help determine what you could have come in contact with (think creams based on that distribution).  If it is felt it is more of an allergy then seeing an allergist for skin testing would also be helpful.I hope this helps and good luck.

It is unlikely that this rash is an allergic reaction to Juvederm or the topical numbing as it is not where the Juvederm was injected. Rashes to Juvederm are extremely rare and would be expected to manifest where the product was placed with the injections. The best way to identify the cause of allergic contact dermatitis is with patch testing which is typically done by a dermatologist.Good luck!Dr. Quenby Erickson
