Is it true that scar tissue contracting can cause the septum to shorten? Rhinoplasty/ septorhinoplasty

Question

My surgeon said he did not shorten my nose (septum) but after the surgery my nose looks shorter. 11 weeks later it is even shorten than 2 weeks after surgery. Can this in theory be true? What can cause the nose to shorten during the healing phase?

It is normal to see two to four millimeters of columella on profile, and it is difficult to see the back of your columella on your new profile. I agree that septal shortening can cause this, however, you are relatively early after surgery and this may get better on its own. I hope this is helpful. Sincerely, Dr Joseph

Hello and thank you for your question. If the construct is unstable and lacks structural integrity, the yes this can happen. Changes can also happen just due to swelling at 11 weeks. I recommend that you maintain close follow up with your surgeon who can evaluate you in person.
