Can you take antihistamines before and after liposuction?

Question

I have allergies and anaphylaxis to an unknown trigger. I take daily antihistamines (over the counter) to prevent anaphylaxis and treat my seasonal allergies. Is it okay to continue on the antihistamines or will it cause a problem with the procedure? (before and after?)

Dear ReallyRealGal, thanks for sharing your concerns, in my opinion this would not be a problem, every plastic surgeon has his own pre and postoperative protocol which he recommends to his patients. Using antihistamines to treat allergies before and after liposuction should not be a problem whatsoever. Simply make sure that your operating surgeon is aware of this situation. I hope this helps and good luck from New York City Plastic Surgery

Patients should review other medications with their surgeon during a proper consultation.

Antihistamines usually do not interfere with performance of an elective surgical procedure. However, anaphylaxis represents a severe life-threatening allergic reaction. As you have already suffered an episode and the trigger is unknown, preoperative medical clearance will be required to ensure the safety of the procedure, which may require performance as an outpatient procedure in a hospital setting. Your allergist or primary care physician must be made aware of the upcoming procedure.
