The Symptoms of Extruding of the Silicon Implant of the Nose?

A nasal implant can extrude either through the skin or the inside lining of the nose.  If the skin is very thin or if there seems to be a point of the implant poking under the skin, have it checked out, it might need removal.

          It should be relatively easy to tell if an implant is compromising the skin and is at risk for extrusion.  The implant can be removed if necessary and the nose, reconstructed with cartilage.  Find a plastic surgeon with ELITE credentials who performs hundreds of rhinoplasties each year.  Then look at the plastic surgeon's website before and after photo galleries to get a sense of who can deliver the results.  Kenneth Hughes, MD Los Angeles, CA

An extruding nasal implant will often make its way through the intranasal soft tissue or out through the nasal skin with inflammation and tissue thinning.

Typically, an impending extrusion is signalled by thinning of the overlying skin and or redness of the skin on top of the implant. In extreme cases, the implant can even poke through the nasal skin or be seen with an examination of the lining of the nostrils. It is usually quite apparent. Seek a rhinoplasty expert and they can let you know what is going on with your nasal implant and remove it if the implant is extruding. I hope this information is helpful.

Silicon nasal implants are frequesntly use and can give a good long term result..

Extrusion is usually easy to diagnose since it can come out through the skin or inside the nose if there is a problem.. It is a good idea to discuss this with a surgeon skilled in rhinoplasty and have an exam..If it looks like it might be extruding or at risk for coming out in the future it is best to have it removed and replaced with your natural tissue.

Generally speaking, nasal implants can be a good option for augmenting the nose.

Nasal implants are mildly controversial, much as other implants such as cheek implants, chin implants, and breast implants are.

Most surgeons would agree that using an implant to augment the bridge of the nose alone is relatively safe. Using an implant to augment both the bridge and tip of the nose, however, has slightly higher risk. Having said this, this is performed very commonly in Asia with mostly good results.

Risks of nasal implants include infection, migration, and extrusion.  Signs of complications with nasal implants include redness, swelling, pain, tenderness, irritation, implant migration, implant visibility, nasal deformity, thinning skin, and change in appearance or feel.

Silicone implants in the nose can often extrude, migrate, or be infected.  Common signs of extrusion include a feeling of pressure or tightness at the nasal tip, migration of the implant itself, any redness or irritation, swelling, or discomfort.  Please consult with a board certified specialist who can help you remove the implant and rebuild your nose using your own cartilage and tissue.

Recurrent swelling, redness, and discomfort may be signs of extrusion of implant. Have an surgeon look up inside your nose when your nose feels uncomfortable. Something may be visible that you cannot see from the outside.

Silicone implants work very well if they are put in correctly... however problems with implants can include but not limited to movement, irregular shape show through the skin, too large, too small and wrong shape. Also extrusion or infection typically manifest in redness, swelling, purulent discharge, irregular looking nasal tip, nasal obstruction or foreign body with the nose. If you suspect something is wrong with it, you should get it checked out by a qualified surgeon.
