Is it normal to experience hair loss after PRP?

Question

I am diagnosed with Androgenic alopecia.I have consulted three doctors and every one recommended the PRP. 4 months back I got one sitting in India and it was painless no scarring/redness. I felt like nothing and there was no hair loss. I got other sitting last week in Texas and I feeling like I am losing more and even the baby hair is falling off and my scalp is still sore.The doctor said as I was close to my periods the pain is common. Is it normal to lose hair after PRP? Any advice would help.

No, prp should not increase hair loss. Prp is effective, but I have a very specific protocol, every 3-4 weeks for 6 months with prp therapy. I also add in progesterone to speed the healing process. I would say diffuse hair loss after PRP would be rare. Did you have any other changes in your lifestyle? Change in your diet or weight loss? Most of my patients report a decrease in hair shedding after PRP treatments.

Hi How are you? Our patients who come in for PRP treatments typically do not complain of hair shedding after the treatment so that is something that should not happen. Depending on which type of PRP, Centrifuge and other methods the DR chooses to use you should see incredible results. However, you really want to make sure that you do research when it comes to choosing a hair transplant DR to inject the PRP Treatments. For example you really want to get the best result and the most out of each prp treatment. Our Practice gets extremely high results because of the centrifuge that we use so we only recommend coming in once every 8-12 months. However, other practices recommend coming in every 3-6 months. This is due to the fact that other places might not provide the strongest most powerful results such as us. It is very important to do your research.

It is not uncommon to have some hair shedding after a PRP treatment.  There can be some irritation of existing hair follicles and also some synchronization of hair growth cycles leading to temporary shedding.  This is not hair loss.  It typically takes around 6 to 9 months for the full cycle to be completed when there is visible improvement in hair density and volume.
