Antibiotics used during rhinoplasty?

dear doctors i have a question: is it common practice to use antibiotics during the nose surgery ?it is (sometimes) prescribed AFTER the surgery for the patient to take 3-5 days. But is it also somehow in some form (intravenous?) put into the patiens body before/during surgery? (maybe contained in the anesthetics?) or does that vary from surgeon to surgeon? thanks

Every surgeon has their own protocol.  I use IV antibiotics prior to surgery, then by mouth for a week.

Hello, Thanks for sharing your query. Yes you are right intravenous antibiotic is given prior to surgery. And post operative oral antibiotics may be given for varied period depending on the surgeon protocol. We routinely give for five days after rhinoplasty. Hope this helps.

Hello ThomasDuncan,With pretty much any surgery you will receive an IV antibiotic.  This has been shown to decrease the risk of infection.  The antibiotic chosen is based on the site of the body undergoing the surgery.  In addition, your surgeon may add an antibiotic after surgery.  The data for how long you should receive that antibiotic after surgery varies, and there is no set protocol.  I hope this helps and good luck.
