Can TCA cross cause more scarring?

Is the TCA cross method a foolproof way to even out scarring or could it just make scars worse than they were to begin with? I have seen a few people ecstatic with their results (for good reason) and others who say it barely made a difference for them.

I recommend seeing a board-certified doctor for the application of TCA cross. Keep in mind, a combination approach will give the most improvement to these types of scars. These types of scars need a combination of lasers, microneedling/prp, Cosmelan, TCA cross, punch excision and fillers. It will take a series of treatments and may need life-long treatments to maintain. I recommend getting a formal evaluation with an acne scarring expert. Best, Dr. Emer

TCA CROSS is high concentration TCA- in most situations 90-100%. This is a low pH and extremely caustic agent. Now, if correct scars are treated - narrow ice pick scars, narrow or linear box car scars - its a good method of scar revision. If wrong scars are treated, examples include broad box car scars, chicken pox scars and saucer scars, TCA will worsen. Be guided by your dermatologist or plastics regarding the procedure.
